American Piano Factory: PV and Solar Thermal Water System
American Piano Factory now owns one of the largest photovoltaic arrays in Bloomington. It consists of twenty modules that generate a total 4.6 kW of power. This amounts to 50% of the business's energy demand now provided by the sun!
The array is ground mounted due to the large area required. Mann Plumbing, Inc built the racking system themselves. Enphase microinverters are utilized to convert the DC power produced by the cells into the AC power used by household appliances. Micro-inverters prevent production losses if a portion of the array is in shade. The production output of the system can be monitored online by the owners.
In addition to the photovoltaic array, the owner also had a solar thermal panel installed to provide hot water to his house. The panel consists of 30 evacuated tubes that will heat water on any sunny day all year round.
To top off this great investment in clean renewable energy the house is also equipped with two solar attic fans to keep it cooler and drier in the summer.
